How can I break my cat out of the habit of biting me for attention?
I have a 1 year old (neutered) male cat. Whenever I sit on a cushion on the floor (which is every day – I like the floor!), he bites or scratches me. If I so much as move my arm out of the way or look at him, he will sometimes get a look of rage on his face and lunge at me! He seems to want to play, because as soon as I get up to walk away he runs to his favourite toy. I played with him for 2 hours in total today and apparently he still wants more!
He never does this to my boyfriend and never does it to me if I sit anywhere other than on the floor!
I play with him every day and love him very much – he gets heaps and heaps of attention. I worry that if I play with him every time he bites me, it will teach him that biting me = play time.
If I walk away, he’ll do it again when I sit down. Can anyone give me advice about how to stop him doing this please?!
Thanks!
xx Emmie
Cats aged 6-18 months are classed as adolescents. As they grow more confident and independent, just like human teenagers, they are constantly testing the boundaries. Male cats in particular have a heightened exploration of dominance, including challenging humans. I think that you already doing the right thing by walking away when he misbehaves. He obviously views you as a play mate and sitting on the floor places you at his level, making you more of a target for his mock hunting attacks. Try to avoid sitting on the floor for a while to see if this helps towards breaking the habit. If you are “less available” to him, he will soon learn that play time is on your terms.
Our 2 year old male cat is still much naughtier than our female cat. She’ll stop whatever she’s doing as soon as I tell her “no”, but sometimes he will have to be told a couple of times before he will stop. You can also try hissing loudly as sometimes this will be more effective than saying “no.” (Hissing will re-awaken memories of mother cat’s discipline). On rare occasions, when he simply refuses to listen, I gently scruff his neck, which makes him calm down immediately.
Our male is a lot more boisterous than our female, but I guess boys will be boys. I’ve learned to live with it in the knowledge that he will calm down as he gets older.
