What kind of safety stirrup should I use?
I ride English and I started jumping. I have peacock irons (the ones with the rubber bands) and I don’t like them. A couple of times the rubber band came off when I didn’t fall and just lost my stirrup. One time I did fall and the rubber band didn’t come off… it wasn’t a bad fall and the horse stopped right away, but I had to shake my foot out of the stirrup. I’ve seen the kind that are curved on one side and the jointed ones. What kind should I use?
Both styles have their pros and cons, unfortunately..so your best bet is to purchase a pair of the other irons and try them out. Like another person said, the curved irons do tend to let your feet slip out a bit more easily..however this can be overcome with a bit of practice. All in all, it’ll all boil down to which type of iron makes you feel most safe/like you could get your feet free should you have an awkward fall.
