Can I barrel race in a rope halter?
So Iv been experimenting with natural horsemanship a while, I recently just have been riding in a rope halter, which might be a parelli hackamore but I am not sure. I’ve loped her and trotted and all that in a rope halter, gone on trail rides, and have done lots of jumping and flexing. So would it be safe to barrel race in one?
First off this will depend on where you are and what kind of barrel racing you are planning to do. Most clubs/organizations have rules and dress codes. You will need to check with where ever you want to ride to learn them. California State Horseman’s Assoc and California Gymkhana Assoc both require you to have a bridle on your horse. So there are a lot of people who use Side-pulls and these are legal as a bridle. May of the jackpot and 4D barrel races do not have tack rules and I have seen people ride with halters. But some of them do have tack rules. Pro rodeo usually lets you ride with what ever you want. And there I have seen halters, side-pulls and just about everything else.
If you have good control with rope halter than there is no reason not to us it. More horses should be that well trained and responsive. But you might think about getting a side-pull so you have a legal “bridle”. You can get them in bio-thane from endurance tack, they also come with soft leather nose bands, as well as single and double hard rope nose bands. If you ride in just halter now I would go with the bio-thane or leather nose bands.
