How do I not be so nervous at a horse show?
I always get freaked out at horse shows when I am riding in cross-country or show jumping, and then I get tense so my horse refuses a lot. How do I stop this?
I always tell myself not to be nervous, but sometimes I will be fine until my horse gets nervous about something. My instructor says I need to be the one who is always confident, but my horse’s emotions directly affect mine. Does anyone have any tips for how we can work through it together so we can just have fun without the nerves?
Any excersizes to calm us down?
I have the same problem with dressage and show jumping. I get so nervous about people watching me! Here are some of the suggestions that my coachs/friends have given me that work.
Try doing deep breathing exercises before you get on. While you are doing this, think about other things. Think of your favorite, most relaxing things to do and hopefully you will be more relaxed!
Also try not to think of the bad things that could possibly happen. Like my coach says “Ride without thinking of the fall.”
Something else that helps me is talking to my horse while I am on course. (I know it sounds dumb but it really does help). It helps relax you and focus on having a good ride. You can chat about all the tips that your coach told you while you are riding. By doing this, you will have a more focused ride and possibly eliminating refusals.
Also make sure that you give your self plenty of time to get ready before cross country/stadium. If you are scurrying around, it increases stress. So give you and your horse plenty of time to get ready and have a nice slow and relaxed warm-up.
